Obituary of Nelda Durham Horton

Nelda Durham Horton passed peacefully into heaven on June 2, 2018 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, NC. 

She was preceded in death by her parents Fay Holmes and May Street Durham, her husband Basil William “Bud” Horton, two sisters Mary Stroupe and Lucille Wilborn and a brother Jim Durham.  Before starting a career, she delighted in working with the nursery and two year old Sunday School classes for her church and with teen youth groups at church summer camp.  After working at First Tennessee Bank for twenty-three years, she retired and moved to Byhalia, MS. 

Nell was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.  She was loved by many and will be dearly missed.  Left to cherish her memory are three children: Marilyn Horton Morris (Mike), William A. “Bill” Horton (Bonny), and Joseph E. Horton, Sr., four grandchildren:  Molly K. Morris, Richard M. “Mickey” Morris, Joseph E. Horton, Jr. and Greg Horton, three great granddaughters, and nieces and nephews.  Other loved ones include a cousin she loved like a sister, Gloria D. Gegumis and her children, the Rufus and Rosemary Pennington family who became a second family to her and a special neighbor, Carolyn Davis. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice  Ln, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, Faith Baptist Church in Byhalia, MS or to the donor’s preference.

A celebration of her life and memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on July 14 at Faith Baptist Church.
