My family wishes to express our most sincere condolences to all of Billy's family. He was such an important part of the community, and was instrumental in the growth of the ORFD. Linville Rd and 150 will never be the same.
I would invite the family to visit the Facebook page Old Oak Ridge, NC and view the kind comments left on the page honoring Billy.

I was deeply saddened to hear that Billy had passed away. I knew Billy for years in the fire service; but our friendship grew through racing. We sat together on Saturday nights at Bowman Gray and traveled together or met a numerous other short tracks. We spent many hours on the phone also.. talking, debating and having a good time. You always knew were you stood with Billy (just like his mother who was my 4th grade teacher). I will miss Billy and Summer Saturday nights will never be the same again.

Our family sends our deepest condolences to Billy's family. We grew up on Linville Road so Billy was our neighbor friend. We have fond memories of riding to the Greensboro coliseum for concerts as he would come and pick up a group of us so we could all ride together. We had so much fun and I know he did too.
Oak Ridge will surely miss him and we're all grateful for his friendship and his love of the community.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Bill through his role as a Magistrate in High Point. He always greeted me by name and asked how I was doing. We had many great conversations over the years and I always enjoyed hearing him tell stories. He was a straightforward man and I appreciated his candor. There was nothing fake about him and I will certainly miss him. Prayers are being lifted for his family and friends.

Billy and I became friends when we worked for the Oak Ridge Horse Show for 20 + years He was a straight forward, cards on the table type of man. Billy was also a man of integrity, honesty, and was always fair and just with every one he worked with. He was smart and resourceful and could do about anything. Billy had a big heart and if you were his friend he would do anything for you.
I was blessed to have had Billy as my friend and I will miss him Sharon Smith

I've know Billy over 35 years beginning when I moved into Drew Darnell's house as a renter on the top floor. Billy and Drew were close friends and Billy and I became kindred friends from the start. We rode horses together, went on sleigh rides, hay rides, trips to Lake Norman, Blowing Rock, North Myrtle Beach, house parties, to many lunches and dinners to count. Billy was always there to help with whatever I needed. (Cars, fences, home repair, etc.) He was my touchstone. Always interesting with a quick sense of humor, he always made me laugh and provided a strong shoulder to lean on when needed. Billy was the type of friend you could count on every time for any reason. I will miss him everyday.

If Billy Newman were your friend, you had won the lottery. I know because Billy was my friend!
I met Billy on September 15, 2001. After falling off my horse, I returned to consciousness with Billy staring down at me saying: “Yea, it’s (collarbone) broken!” We had bought Beaver Dam Farm; and I was a city boy who didn’t know a damn thing about a farm. After getting out of the hospital, Billy began to look in on me regularly to make sure I didn’t kill myself. He was always there sharing his knowledge of farming, horses, tractors, rabid raccoons and everything else that happens on a farm. He pulled my tractor out of the creek three times ... for several years, whenever I called he would say “John... don’t tell me, you got your tractor stuck again!” I marveled at the precision he demonstrated on his tractor and bobcat. He also introduced me to auto racing on the special “toothless #@*$+ night”. Billy was a true friend.
I greatly respected and admired Billy because “he could do things”. There was nothing that Billy, Danny or Doug could not do or fix, even if they had to make the parts themselves. Billy Newman was a really good guy. I was blessed to know that in a world that seemed to get crazier everyday, God still made good guys!

As with many, many others, I too worked with Billy as an ORFD volunteer and an Oak Ridge Horse Show volunteer. Billy was also a highly competitive church league softball player and coach. He liked to win. Translation, he hated to lose. Win or lose, he would always extend the hand and give you that huge smile.
Oak Ridge has certainly lost a community gentleman, friend and avid volunteer.

We are so saddened to hear of Billy’s death. I’ll miss seeing him drive around Oak Ridge in his white pickup truck. In years back we use to go out every Friday night for dinner and just good conversations on life. I miss that! As everyone says, Billy was one of a kind and left this world way to soon. Your work here is done Billy, rest with our Lord and your love ones❤️
