Obituary of James Xavier "Jimmy" Scherry

James “Jimmy” Scherry, born in Wilmington, DE, passed away after a long illness at his home in Winston-Salem, NC on July 5th. He is preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Scherry and parents, Joseph and Eleanor. He is survived by his sister, Dottie Kula of Kernersville, NC and her husband, Albert. Jimmy was also an uncle to five nieces and one nephew.

Jimmy was a decorated U.S. Army veteran who served overseas in the Vietnam War as a dental technician. During his service in Vietnam, Jimmy received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, two Overseas Service Bars, and the M14 Expert Badge. He also served as an E.M.T. in Havre de Grace, MD. Jimmy was always a man of great Catholic faith who once attended seminary and assisted at his local parish, Our Lady of Mercy, in his retirement.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at a later date at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, Winston-Salem, NC. Inurnment will follow at Salisbury National Cemetery.
