Obituary of Dorothy May Klopp Neely

Dorothy “Dottie” Neely, 73, a passionate advocate for the disabled and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died February 1, 2021, in her home.  Her life goal was to help others, especially the blind and disabled, achieve independence and self-determination to pursue their own life’s path.

A time of remembrance to honor her life will be held 1:00PM Saturday, April 24 at the Pierce-Jefferson KERNERSVILLE Chapel, 213 West Mountain Street, Kernersville, NC 27284.  In lieu of flowers, please donate in her memory to either the Lions Club Memorial Fund, or the Brighter Path Program at IFB Solutions Foundation.

A native of Muskegon, Michigan, Dottie was the 4th of 8 children, the daughter of the late Dorothy May Beaty and Erwin Richard Klopp.  She graduated from the Michigan School for the Blind and Western Michigan University.  Her career began as a teacher of braille, and then transitioned to social work.  Her final job was as a seamstress at the Industries for the Blind.  She was active in her community as president of local National Federation of the Blind, and Lions Club chapters.  While in the Lions Club, she was a Jack Stickley and Melvin Jones Fellow.  The Lions Club honored her with a Governor’s Achievement Award, and a President’s Award.  She was also appointed to represent passengers on the Greensboro Department of Transportation Advisory Board.  She was awarded a Past Presidents Award, Distinguished Mayors Committee Award, and the Emma Ray Distinguished Service Award by Greensboro Mayor’s Committee for Persons with Disabilities.  She was most proud of helping individuals as a Stephen Minister.  Dottie was a loving mother, passionate advocate, and accomplished mentor.

When not working, she enjoyed spending time with family and watching movies.  She donated many knitting projects to the local Cancer Society.  She often placed well in bowling tournaments.

Survivors include her children, Jillaine Burke and Alan Burke both of Winston Salem; grandchildren, Chelsea Scales and Nehemiah Scales both of Greensboro; and great-grandchildren, London Douglas and Alayah Douglas both of Greensboro.
