I met Rod Davis years ago and became friends with him. I offered to help in any way I could when his leg was amputated and he was having difficulties. He always made each person feel so special! One of the kindest guys I ever met. Will truly be missed by everyone!! Such a huge loss!!

Rest in Peace Rod. You were a true friend to those you called friend. We all have memories to share of times that we have spent with you. I consider myself to be one of the lucky ones to have been able to spend time with you and all of those in the WMAG radio family. You will be greatly missed by many. To Rod's children, I know that you are in pain, but know that you had a dad that loved you. He is no longer in pain and is watching over you now. I pray for peace and comfort for you as you go through this trying time.

I am sadden, heartbroken, to hear of Rod's passing and learn that he was so ill and in pain for so long. Rod and I were childhood friends growing up in the same neighborhood a couple of blocks from Aycock school. We had such wonderful times. Because there were about 15 of us close in age there was always enough to have a softball game, kickball, roll-the-bat. Rod and I, he was Rodney then, would race in our medal sidewalk skates and he would always beat me. It made him mad though that I could skate backwards and he couldn't. We also raced each other on our bikes with me usually winning these races. He left me for dead a couple of times. The first time was when people were actually walking on "our" sidewalk. Rod jumped the curb into the street, and I went left into the backyards. It was dusk and I had forgotten and couldn't see Mrs. Crews clothesline. I was pedaling as fast as I could and when I hit it, it hit me across my shoulders and chest knocking me off my bike flat on my back knocking he wind out of me. I'm just laying there trying to breathe and Rod pulls up beside me and just stares then quickly riding off. Later that night he comes to the back screen door but wouldn't come in ... just stared at me, turned and went down the steps. At the bottom he said, "glad you're not dead". The other time was when I hit a pothole and sliding down the pavement. Rod flies past me. My Mom walked me to Edmonds Drug store where Mr . Edwards picked gravel and rocks out of my skin and bandaged me up. The worst part was the next day was the next to the last day of school and I was to receive a Safety Patrol Award. I didn't want to go to the stage when my name was called, but the teacher made me. Because of our last names, Rod was sitting beside me. He started laughing, the whole room was laughing because I had bandages from my shoulder to my hand and in a sling, and from my thigh to the middle of my calf hobbling up to get a safety award. Even as we all were walking home he kept laughing. As we got older we would walk all the way to McDonalds to get milkshakes, or just hang out on the porch listening to the radio. One night a song comes on and I said "I love this song". Others made a comment and Rod said, "it's alright I guess". Things change. My Mom bought a house out in the country, Rod's family moved to the beach. The neighborhood really changed as others moved too. When I was around 26 I had a dance partner and we would enter dance contest in clubs round the area. One night my partner asked me who that guy was that kept watching us dance. After a few twirls I saw who he was talking about ... I yelled it's Rodney! I left my dance partner on the floor and ran and threw my arms around his neck and gave him a big hug. I received a polite grandma type hug back. When I let go he said he enjoyed watching me dance and that I was really good. I realized he had no idea who I was. "Rodney, it's me, Susan DaBiero". This time the hug was like a bear hug and he kept telling me how beautiful I was and me telling me how handsome he was. We were no longer those skinny knocked kneed kids. We only spoke a moment before my partner came and got me. Several weeks went by and I received a call from Rod. He asked me to listen to his show that night as he was going to play a song for me and to call him at a certain number when I figured it out. Finally a song came on that took me back to a hot summer night sitting on the porch listening to the radio that I hadn't heard in years. It was Sitting in the Park, by Billy Stewart. When I called I told him I couldn't believe he had remembered. He said it had become one of his favorites too. Again, time went by. I remarried had more children, he remarried and had more children and the years went by running into each other at the toy store, grocery store, and drug store. The last time I saw Rod was at the CVS and had his foot all bandaged up. He told me it was an old basketball injury. I was glad to read about his happy times living at the beach and all the wonderful things he accomplished in his way too short life. All the people he touched with his life. My deepest heartfelt sympathies to his children, grandchildren, family and to all of us who cared about and loved Rod. When we meet up again Rodney, when we're both healthy and whole again, I may just let you win our next bike race. Rest in peace in God's arms my friend. Love

Dana and family,
We are so sorry to hear of your loss. Your dad was a great man. I remember him mostly from school years ago here in Manteo. I remember the first day he arrived. I think it's the first time I had ever seen anyone that tall. LOL He was always so kind to everyone. I use to love listening to him as DJ at the radio station here on the OBX .I also remember his working with Maola Milk Company and I lived on the main hwy. in Manteo. He would stop by my house several days a week, every week during the summer and drop off ice cream and popsicles for my kids. He just did it from the kindness of his heart. Over the years, we've chatted on FB and I was always amazed by the things he had done. We will always have special memories of Rodney. We will hold you and your family in our prayers.

He stopped by my pharmacy window as I was headed out to do my patient charting..I actually walked him to the area he needed..he came back a week or so later to thank me for my kindness..I truly felt blessed, just from that moment..later, I was running some errands around town.. I'm in Kohl's on Battleground...He remembered me..Rodney (Rod) Edward Davis made an impact on me....his smile and laugh being so contagious ...he will be truly missed !!

At just 17 years old. Rod took me under his wing and staring teaching me how the radio world worked (at least how it worked for hi,). Any of us that knew Rod loved him. He had a way to make you feel as if you were a part of the actions on air. In truth he as the pied pipper moving us in his direction to make the bit work. Over time you started watching how he did his magic and would learn that there are not a lot of tricks to it. It is 100% Rod being Rod. The best you could do was to hold own and hope for the best.
One of the few stories I can tell on this platform was the him he and I went sky diving together on the air at 7:45 (Had to get that .25 hour.demo in there. We were standing on the edge of a hot air ballon and the polit was supposed to give us a 3-2-1- and then we would both fall backwards out of the ballon and chutes would open within a few moments. So here we go. 3 2 1 and I feel the wind in my face. I look up and dang with Rod is not sitting on the ballon waving at me. He decided in the last moment that it would make more sense to only have one of us fall 1000s of feet while the other reported on what he saw.
The rest of these stories we will share when the time is right.
Rod - When I was 15 years old and told you this is what I wanted to do. You have of yourself to me. Helping me learn the ins and outs. what parts of our demo was important to make sure we interacted exp. when we would be in public. THere any many things you taught me that I will never be able to thank you for because of several reasons. Some that could put me in jail.
Rest in Piece my Friend. The later years of your life were not easy. But you kept that Davi's desire to be the best that you can be. You are a local treasure liked, by some many, loved by more, and holds a place deep into the hearts of those who had the pleasure to work with you. I will. miss and I love you.

Our sons were in school together and played on the basketball team. Rod was often at games supporting and cheering the team and our kids. One memory survives. I was the assistant basketball coach. On picture day for our team and coaches, I forgot to wear a dress jacket. Rod was a giant at 6'6" and made this 6'0" look like a squirt. I noticed Rod had on a blue blazer and with some trepidation, asked if I might borrow it to wear for the optic. He obliged, but wondered aloud with an obvious chuckle, if it might not be a little too 'big'! It was 'comfy', but I managed to sorta hide behind some of the players enough to offset the obvious misfitting. True story and great memory about Rod Davis.

I can honestly say that Rod was not only the most uniquely powerful personality I’ve ever known, but a genuinely good person who loved his fellow human beings. He was one of those rare people who instantly take over a room upon entering. He truly had fans who loved him. Why? Because they instinctively knew he loved them back.
