As I watched everyone speak of Big Jim I became aware of all the wonderful people in this world I've never gotten to know. Ginger you and Jim raised quite a family. I can think of no greater accomplishment. My heart is sad for your family in this difficult time. Jim will live on through his family.
I love you cuz

I wish there were prayers that could make grief less devastating, dear cousins of various removes, and especially you, Ginger, but grief is unbearable, yet we bear it. I prayed for Jim back when we all needed to, and in this time too, so I feel a closeness to him, a feeling that I will know him if and when God invites me into the realm of light.
My prayers now will be for you, Ginger. They will be a gift, a way to thank God for the happiness we experienced together in Lewisburg when were so young and so silly, when we had no idea of the joys and sorrows to come. I think grief never leaves us, but becomes like a diamond created from unthinkable pressure, sending out rays of sparkling, crystal light, allowing us to love others more, even though it is still, and always, grief.
I am so sorry for your unfathomable loss.

Ginger, Britney, Amy, Eric, Jill and the rest of this very extended family,
There are never mere words that can express the sorrow one feels for the loss of one so deeply loved. Jim was more a brother to me than the term ‘brother-in-law’ could ever express. It was often the case that strangers would mistake our similarity of appearance to be true brothers vs. being married to the true sisters. We became friends before we became brothers-in-law and grew that friendship as we raised our families together, collaborated on many many household moves, vacationed together and lended support to each other at some of our most vulnerable moments. While Jim’s passing will leave a whole in my life, that loss cannot even begin to compare to what you each will experience...I want you to each know that I will be there for each of you in whatever way that I can to fill a small piece of that loss. I can never replace your husband/dad but will do all that I can to be more than just a brother-in-law or uncle or even a Goopaw

It has been an honor and privilege of grow up with my best friend and sister Ginger! When she found Jim, the love of her life 40 some years ago I felt blessed that he had come into her life and mine as well! Ginger and I planned our weddings together and were each other’s Maid of honor and got married in the same year- 1978! We have been together thru all of life’s ups and downs and Jim was always there adding joy, comfort and love. I will miss him each and every day but I was so privileged to call him my brother in law and dear friend! May you ride all the lawn movers available in heaven and keep those darn leaves off the lawn! I love you Jim Howland and I promise you I will be here for your Ginger!

My Dear cousin Ginger, and Amy, Brittany, Eric, and Jill, and their spouses (I’m guessing you all feel a bit like Howland kids, too) and the grandkids who loved their Goopaw and don’t know what to do with loss, and who are probably feeling a little lost themselves,
I feel such a deep sadness for all of you at the loss of your patriarch, for that is who Jim was – the senior, male head (although we all know Ginger shared equally in that role) of your big, glorious tribe. For Ginger, Jim was her sweetheart and rock. For his kids he was Daddy and their safety. How does one replace that? You don’t. And, of course, you wouldn’t want to. But how does one live with this giant hole that is now where Jim was? One foot in front of the other is usually the best we can do for a long while. There is no condolence or sympathy I can offer to help you. I can only keep you all in my heart and in my prayers.
It’s not surprising to know from all my cousins that Jim was loved so very much. It’s not surprising to me because, Ginger, you had the best example of who a husband and father should be. Your dad, my Uncle Charlie, was the most loving husband and father a man could be. He was delighted by family, was playful and helpful to those who needed it. He was a dear, sweet man and my favorite uncle by far. How sorry I am that I didn’t really get to know Jim and spend time with my Henderson cousins and their kids, the way we did when we were kids. But I’d bet my life on it that Jim had all of your dad’s qualities, Ginger. What I know for sure was your Jim experienced the same tremendous love we all had for your dad. That is an extraordinary thing to leave this earthly plain with and carry into the heavenly realm.
Your cousin sends you an embrace and lots of love,
Alexis
