Obituary of Maudie Cummings Gilliam

MAUDIE CUMMINGS GILLIAM, 89, passed peacefully on Sunday morning, December 4, 2022, in her daughter’s home in Kernersville, North Carolina. 

Maudie, aka “G”, was born on July 12, 1933, a twin with her late brother, Virgil Cummings, unto the late James Boyce and Bessie Townsend Cummings.  She and her sister, Jenny McConnell grew up in Whitmire, SC.  She is survived by her four children, Angela G. Christopherson (Bruce), A. Gerald (“Jerry”) Gilliam (Pam), Donna Lynn Coley, and Patricia “Trish” G. McCurdy (John); and four grandchildren, Paige G. Hoxie (Thomas), Bruce E. Christopherson, II (Jodie), Blake Hunter Christopherson, Angelica L. Mulligan (Shane) and L. Paige Sandifer (Scottie).  She enjoyed the love of many great-grandchildren, Hunter G. Christopherson, Bricen K. Christopherson, Bailey Grace Christopherson, Kenzley L. Christopherson, Emily A. Mulligan, and Shane “Bubby” R. Mulligan, Jr.  Maudie shared many good years with the late Alfred P. Gilliam, and later shared a close personal relationship with Don Wilburn.  She later resided with her daughter, Lynn, in Carolina Shores, NC. 

Maudie was skilled in many ways and worked all her life to provide for and instill unto her children unconditional love, Jesus’ gift of forgiveness, and the value of education and independence.  Her children, family and those that knew her have been truly blessed by her encouragement and grace. 

Maudie was the proud fur-mom of many precious four-legged furry canines throughout her life.  Some she inherited, some she chose and some that chose her.  However, acquired, each was a cherished spirit that thrived in her presence because of her kind nature. 

Maudie enjoyed her “green thumb” and was a prize-winning grower of the Chocolate Soldier plant with the Ladies Gardening Club in Beckley, West Virginia, and grew beautiful potted African Violets in various colors over the years.  Her lawn bloomed throughout the spring with beautiful azaleas and throughout the summer with amaryllis, daylilies, and roses as she worked countless hours in her flowerbeds and loved every minute. 

Maudie achieved many of her ambitions throughout her lifetime, but the greatest achievement was her family.  She was so proud of each one.  Her children and family loved her graciousness, kindness and spirited life.  She will live forever in our hearts!
