Joe was such a kind person. We had just moved in and he invited us to Christmas Eve dinner. Even though we knew him briefly, he will be in our hearts forever. Patti, we are here for you if you need anything.

I came to know Joe through our mutual love of tennis. He had a mean “buggy whip” forehand which confounded many opponents. Add it to his competitive nature and being a southpaw, he had one tough hombre on the opposite side of the net. As tough as he was on the court, he was just as gentle off. His droll sense of humor wrapped in heavy sarcasm was engaging to me. Our common love for Blazing Saddles coupled with Joe’s frequent random texted movie quotes (“Badges, we don’t need no stinking badges!!”) and movie clips (The sheriff is near and more) always made me laugh (and coerce me to send a response). He was compassionate as he always was checking to see how my Cindy was doing ( she was battling Ovarian cancer). I will miss Joe but am certainly anxious for our grand reunion our Lord promises us. So Joe, it’s not goodbye. It’s just until we see each other again.

Regrettably, I knew Joe only for a year or so on the pickleball court. In spite of the short duration, I was deeply saddened by the news concerning his health and passing. During our short exchanges over the year, Joe made it a point to be un-reservedly friendly, encouraging and welcoming. My prayer is that the family will experience the sustaining presence of the love of God, grace of the Lord Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit. I have and will continue to miss you friend.

I had the privilege of meeting Joe through pickle ball. I always looked forward to the days that he would proctor at Leitersburg or text inviting me to come play at the Smithsburg Country Club. I could always count on him to welcome everyone with a smile or kind words, humor or just some competitive spirit! I know I speak for many when I say how much I will miss that RIDICULOUS left handed LOB serve that never seemed to come down!
As I was reminiscing about memories of Joe, I smiled because I can still hear him saying, “Oh Joe… sorry partner!” when he made an error. I loved playing with him and against him. I know he is a better place playing with no pain, but I will miss beating up on he and Greg or he and Larry:)
Rest in peace friend and love and hugs to Patti and family❤️

Patti, you can't imagine how sad Cheryl and I are because of Joe's sudden illness and untimely passing. Joe has been my friend for more than 30 years dating back to when he kicked my butt in a tennis tournament at "the bubble". Joe could light up any room that he was in and I never heard anyone say anything but good things about him. As you know, I've always thought of Joe as being my "brother from a different mother" and I still can't believe that I won't be able to share his company any more. I hope that you know that you will always be a good friend to both Cheryl and myself and you are always welcome to our home.

Dear Patti, Monday-Wednesday-Friday no matter who was waiting on us to play pickleball, Joe had to tell me a joke first. I came to look forward to his jokes. He always asked about Pam and how she was doing with her battle with cancer and how she was doing with Dr Friedman. Your husband simply lit up Leitersburg when he arrived! He will be missed by all! God Bless!

Dear Patti, I was so very saddened when I heard of Joe's passing. What a special childhood friend he was! I have been thinking back this past week, with lots of smiles when I remember the fun of our childhood. I remember our special group of neighborhood friends. We had such great times, basketball, tennis, movies, Rocky's pizza on Friday nights, and of course his love of music. Always playing that "air guitar"! Of course he never ever let me forget how I would sing the lyrics to David Bowie's Suffragette City wrong. "Say Man". Joe's sense of humor is something I will always remember. The kindness he showed to my Mom with his visits and gifts of soup from her favorite restaurant were so special. Mom thought the world of him also. Joe and I had lost contact for about 30 years, so I am so glad we did reconnect later. He told me he had married a beautiful blonde named Patti, and I'm so glad to have met you also. It was always so fun to meet up with you both when I visited Hagerstown. Patti, I send you my condolence, love, and prayers for peace at this difficult time. Joe will always be remembered as someone very special in my life! Love Patti Scherer Johnson

It is with great sadness that I have heard of Joe's passing. Joe was one of our neighborhood friends consisting of guys and girls who hung out together and had many good times and laughs together. There were, at any given time, 6-8 of us that played ping pong, basketball, listened to music, and rode often to get ice cream while listening to Motown music on my 8 track player in the car. Joe loved music and often did his "air guitar" motions, especially to Jethro Tull music. Although I lost touch with Joe through the years, while living in other states, my teenage memories of Joe and our friends are precious. Patti and family, I'm holding you close in prayer and am deeply sorry for your loss. Much love, Kristi ( Schlotterbeck) Frush
