Obituary of Stella Rogers Townsend
Stella R. Townsend of Twin Lakes Retirement Center, Burlington, N.C. died peacefully on Friday, November 24, 2023, at 100 years of age. She was born December 29, 1922, in Cookeville, TN to Charles C. and Genevieve Rogers and raised in Boone, NC. Following her baccalaureate degree from then Appalachian State Teacher’s College, her professional career took her to Greensboro, N.C. where she met her husband, Hugh C. Townsend. She was a 30-year employee of Greensboro Public Schools Media Services. Furthering her dedication to education, she obtained her Master’s in Library Science at UNCG and was an adjunct instructor, helping numerous future librarians in the Guilford/Alamance county area.
She was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church in Greensboro for many years before moving to Twin Lakes and joining the Gibsonville United Methodist Church. She acquired many lifelong friends from childhood to retirement - spanning from the mountains of North Carolina to the beach vacations she loved with family and colleagues. She was an avid reader and proficient at needlework.
She was preceded in death by her husband Hugh of 65 years and daughter-in-law, Susan Townsend. She is survived by her daughter, Terry and husband Patrick McDaid of Greensboro; her son, Tom Townsend of Halifax, Virginia; grandchildren Emily Shagena, Samuel and Robert Townsend, and Cianne Martin; and 4 great-grandchildren.
A memorial celebration of life will be at 2:00 PM on December 15th in the May-Foley Chapel, Twin Lakes Community.
